Diamond District

My Dudes

I lived in Washington D.C. for three years after graduating from the University of Maryland.  It’s a great city, filled with lots of culture and beauty.  It’s also very grimey.  Don’t get it twisted.  I had the chance to enjoy all aspects of it.  Sure, I lived only a few blocks from Georgetown, but I spent my fair share of time in all areas of the “DMV” (DC, Maryland, Virginia).  Though fairly small, there is a blooming hip hop scene down there, and I was fortunate enough to be friendly with some of the dudes who are now popping on a national (and even international) level.

Led by producer/rapper Oddisee (above right, who I know from my DMV days), Diamond District is comprised of three m.c.’s (XO and YU also), and I do mean m.c.’s.  These guys can rap.  And with production reminiscent of the mid 90’s boom bap, their album In The Ruff sounds more east coast than any other rap release to come out of the nation’s capital.  Their lyrical content is very inviting to intelligent listeners, and their beats are gritty head nodders that will not only impress even the gulliest of street dudes but will also peak the interest of rap nerds too with great samples, drum patterns, sounds, and structures.  And no, the songs don’t sound dated or retro.  It’s a fresh new DMV sound!  This is one of those high caliber underground albums that true hip hop heads needed desperately.  And at 11,000 free downloads plus in the first six weeks on the net, people are slowly but surely going to realize that D.C. ain’t no joke.  NYC better step their game up.  Download this clean version now, and cop the dirty version when it’s released officially this summer.

These guys have a bunch of other stuff in the works too (solo albums, collabos, etc.) so stay tuned.  And if you’re digging what you hear, peep out this new mostly intrumental EP Oddisee released for free download below.  The cover photo was taken in the Sudan, where he spent many summers growing up.  Pretty ill.

And as a bonus, I gotta put you on to a new mix from my dude Supa Qool DJ Uncle Q called By All Means Badu (cover below).  Uncle Q and I go way back to the dorms of College Park, and although he grew up in NYC (Brooklyn stand up!), he is a cornerstone of the D.C. hip hop music scene and also the Diamond District’s show DJ.  He’s actually my connection to Oddisee.  This Erykah Badu mix is perfect for the summer.  Now that I think about it, I saw Badu live at Constitution Hall in D.C.  Wow, that was a great show, right after her release of Mama’s Gun which is one of my all time favorite R & B albums.  Check Uncle Q’s mix out below, it’s one long mp3 so let it ride…

Ok, here’s the first single off the new Matisyahu album Light, scheduled to be released August 25th.  Just saw him at his parent’s house in WP for his surprise 30th birthday party, and he was in great spirits and excited about the single.  He should be, it’s dope.  The Matisyahu summer tour starts this week in Florida, and as I mentioned in the post below, he’ll be in NY on the Central Park Summerstage July 9th, and I’ll be making my usual special appearance with him.  For now, you can listen to the single by clicking the link below…

Juan Epstein is easily hip hop’s most entertaining podcast.  Featuring Hot 97’s Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, this is a rap nerd’s dream talk show, especially since now they regularly have on legendary guests (dig into the Westcheddar archives for their interviews with Large Professor, Fat Joe, and Pete Rock).  Their latest episode features Method Man, Redman, and Busta Rhymes in one pop, all who just dropped albums this week.  It’s a very fun listen.  Lots of talk about the good old 90’s.  Link below…

*BONUS UPDATE*  Just want to put this up here real quick.  Rosenberg caught up with Dave Matthews recently down in the Hot 97 for a brief walk and talk…check the vid…

The new stadium at 161st and River still has the old one’s name so we have other options for those who worship in the Bronx: a sweat tribute to Cosell and the summer of ’77, a tee celebrating the best candy bar of all time, and No Mas’s first baseball hat–in navy and white of course. Also check out our short on Yankee superfan Freddy Sez.

Beantown, your baseball squad is a sore subject around here, but we gave you some parquet love to ease your playoff pain: a sweat commemorating the greatest championship streak and a tee celebrating Boston’s most famous deadhead.

Matisyahu sent me this song a few months ago he did with Crystal Method, and now it’s being officially released on their new album.  Check out the video above, it’s quite cool.  And Crystal Method are some fun dudes.  They opened up for Matis the night Max Bee and I performed with him at Webster Hall, and they were partying backstage and were extra friendly.  The song is called “Drown in the Now”.  Get it free with the link below.  Holler back.

Dana and I got married yesterday in the heart of White Plains, New York.  It was a perfect spring day that couldn’t have been any better.  I’m still soaking it all in and fielding pictures that family and friends are sending to us as we pack for our honeymoon.  There were truly so many amazing moments I won’t even attempt to try and list them.  But before I bounce to Hawaii with my beautiful wife, I have to leave you with these video highlights (and sick pic above of all fellas with the bride) from the reception at the VIP Country Club in New Rochelle, courtesy of my homegirl Maddie….check these out….”SWITCH!!!!” is definitely a must watch…

Check this video out right now.  Jadakiss, who just dropped his album last week, bugs out over one of his new cuts in the Hot 97 studio and offices with Cipha Sounds, Peter Rosenberg, and the rest of the Hot 97 morning show crew (plus some other Hot 97 DJ’s, personalities, etc).  Featuring a nice cameo from my boy out of WP Just Boogz who you can see rocking a Dirty Jax sweatshirt in the video.  Big ups to Jada of course for always holding down the 914, and to Ciph and Rosenberg for supporting Stan Ipcus by playing my songs on Hot 97.  And watch out for my little dude Just Boogz, he’s coming up in the game!!!!  Peace family….

My cousin Chris Isenberg over at No Mas NYC just put me on to his new documentary style video of the legendary Yankee fan Freddie Sez.  Here’s his description from the No Mas website:

As a tribute to the old Yankee Stadium (or the newer incarnation of the old Yankee Stadium) we made a short documentary last year about Fred Schuman aka Freddie Sez. On the way from his Upper West Side apartment to the Bronx for the Stadium’s last opening day, the eighty-three year old tells tells the story of his transformation into the Yankees’ pan-and-spoon-carrying unofficial mascot. We’ve saved it for this moment, and we hope you enjoy.

Check the video below, and hopefully we’ll see Freddie at the new ballpark…

I’m about to put out this Stan Ipcus x Dirty Jax BEST OF IP mixtape.  It represents the end of an era.  Single Stan Ip is about to be a wrap (I’m getting married next month son).  I’ve been recording for more than a decade as a bachelor, and since my boy Josh aka Sure Shot from Dirty Jax (above with Big Fat Ip hahaha) made my first album cover for Pu Click Poetry (not to mention covers for my second album Extra Him AND third album Flirting with Fame), I asked him to lace me for the BEST OF IP.  The mixtape has a bunch of new stuff that I’ve leaked over the past few months, some on air radio freestyles, remixes, and my favorite songs from my last three projects (Bachelor Party, Real Breezy with DJ Roz, and Flirting with Fame).  I even snuck a live throwback from my College Park days on there.  Check out this review of Bachelor Party below…the free download link is there too if you still don’t have that get it asap!!!!

Buzzafied Bachelor Party Review

In addition, I will be posting free download links to my entire discography, from the late 90’s “little gipper flipper” years to now, along with the BEST OF IP, on April 1st, 2009, here on WESTCHEDDAR.  Here’s a little promo video I did, kind of a warm up for next week…one of my favorite songs to perform…a true IP standard…”I Does This”.  I’m spitting that quickness so keep up!!!  Enjoy, and check back with WESTCHEDDAR.COM (that’s right we dropped the wordpress from our web address finally) for the Stan Ipcus x Dirty Jax BEST OF IP mixtape next week.  It’s a classic…

And here’s a bonus.  My first ever Youtube video, which also features me spitting that quick style my “day one” friends and fans always appreciate.  This is “Hey”, off Real Breezy with DJ Roz, over a Red Hot Chili Peppers loop I put together.  Another one of my favorites to perform…

See you fools April 1st…peace.

This is the first movie of 2009 I am looking forward to seeing in the theaters.  Paul Rudd, Jason Segal, and Andy Samberg?  Nice.  Though Judd Apatow has nothing to do with this one, it still seems like it has potential for big laughs.  Finally, a chick flick for men.  And yes, I’m heterosexual.  Peep the trailer.  See you at the theater.

P.S.  I just found out that Westcheddar alumnus Nick Kroll is in this movie too.  From his Facebook update:

“Nick Kroll wants you to see I LOVE YOU, MAN this weekend. Cause he has like 2 lines in it and its really funny.”
