Decade Dingers

Uncategorized

As we approach the end of the decade, the first of the 2000’s, there will be many “best of the decade” type lists and projects popping up.  Every hip hop blogger is going to weigh in on what they feel is the best music from this decade.  And rightfully so.  I mean, the end of a decade is an appropriate time to reflect on the past.  And for hip hop, well, it’s been an amazing ten years.  As much as I love 90’s hip hop music, I think some exceptional material was released this decade, on albums, mixtapes, and more recently via the internet.  So on that note, Westcheddar presents DECADE DINGERS, a compilation of 21 of some of my personal favorite cuts from the past ten years of hip hop music.  There’s some mixtape gems, slept on album tracks, rarities, and even a couple  blends, all which I would label as excellent post-90’s rap music.  Don’t be upset if you don’t see your choice of songs or artists on here, you can make your own CD too.  In fact, I encourage it.  But this is how I will fondly remember the 2000-2009 hip hop.  This CD represents IP’s taste buds for beats and rhymes.  These are some of the tracks that got a lot of airplay in MY whip.  I think you’re gonna like it.  Some of it may be familiar, and some of it mat not.  Or you might say, “I forgot about that joint!”  Check the tracklist and then click the link below it to download…

Mayer Hawthorne‘s debut album A Strange Arrangement is still getting alot of spins at Westcheddar headquarters.  Here’s his new video for “Green Eyed Love”, which I’ve heard him say is his favorite song on the album.  Word has it that Hawthorne is going to be doing some upcoming shows with another Mayer in the near future— John Mayer—who supposedly is a big fan of his.  I’d go to that show in a second…

There’s a few songs I’ve had on repeat for the past few days, and I feel it’s my duty to share them with you, especially since so many people out there have lost faith in new hip hop.  Don’t worry.  There’s still dope songs that come out.  Here’s five relatively new ones that I like…off his upcoming album Before I Self Destruct…

50 Cent “Crime Wave”….Whoa, this beat is hard body!  Here’s the video, which is funny and violent but definitely not as good as the song…

Drake “Fear”….I’m not the biggest Drake fan, but I love this song.  The production is awesome, and the hook has a dope melody.  “Look me in the eyes, don’t believe the lies, please don’t be scared of me”….he’s got some great lyrics in his verses too, though I wish he wouldn’t flow exactly the same on all his tracks.  Still, good song.  I feel him on this one…by the way, this is a bonus track on his official So Far Gone mixtape release…

Freeway “When I Rap”….Yo, when Freeway first came out, he was a monster!  I still remember the first time I heard him on a DJ Clue tape rapping live on Hot 97 with Beanie Sigel.  I’ve always liked his style, though lately I haven’t heard much I like from him.  However, he gets busy on this new song called “When I Rap” which is off a new project he has dedicated to Eminem called Freelapse.  Check this out, he goes in on some quick shit…

Sean Price “Figure Four”….This guy is another beast on the mic.  I love Heltah Skeltah’s first album, but I don’t jock his new stuff like the majority of the underground rap blog world does.  Nevertheless, this little freestyle song he did in preparation for his Kimbo Price mixtape is ill.  It’s over the same beat that Jay Electronica went in on recently (which I posted).  I’ll get to him next…

Jay Electronica featuring Mr. Porter “Hard To Get”….This song isn’t brand new, but it’s new to me and I can’t get enough of it.  It’s real smooth.  He’s got a weird video for it.  Looking forward to hearing some new stuff from this guy…

Download all five songs HERE.  You like any of these?

A brand new Jay Electronica song “Exhibit C” just surfaced and it has the rap world in a frenzy.  Just Blaze, who produced it, premiered it on his radio show.  Check it out on NAHRIGHT

Here we go.  The third volume of 90’s Grab Bag, my monthly throwback hip hop video series.  These ones in particular really bring me back to my high school days.  Enjoy…

A Tribe Called Quest “Electric Relaxation”

Pete Rock and CL Smooth “They Reminisce Over You”

Artifacts “Wrong Side of the Tracks”

Digable Planets “9th Wonder (Blackitolism)”

If you missed them, here’s the links to 90’s Grab Bag Volume and One and Two.  See you next month with more classics….

*UPDATE*

I’m tight with Youtube right now because the videos I chose for this keep getting deleted!  Damnit man!  Anyway, I switched the Pete Rock and CL Smooth “I Got A Love” with another one of their classics, “They Reminisce Over You”.  As for my Notorious B.I.G. “One More Chance” pick, well it looks like all Biggie’s videos have been pulled off Youtube, so instead, please enjoy a live performance of his from the Apollo…

How I Got Over

Uncategorized

Music The Roots

The Roots may be Jimmy Fallon’s house band, but they still find time to get in the studio and record.  Their new album, How I Got Over, got its release date pushed back until February 2010, but the video for the title track dropped this week.  Check it out, it’s hot.  I like this song too!

The director of this video, BBGUN, also directed the Kid Cudi “Day ‘N’ Nite (Crookers Remix)” video, which was released in the beginning of September.  This is the song that my wedding party came out to at our reception, and every time I hear it I will always think of that moment…

That’s all for now.  Smell you later.

Broken Bells

It’s official.  The Shins’ lead singer James Mercer and Danger Mouse have formed a band and are putting out an album together.  The band is called Broken Bells, at least for now.  I guess it is still subject to change.  This is an exciting musical merger.  I’m have the utmost respect for both of these guys musically.  The Shins are probably my favorite band of all time, and Danger Mouse, well he was born in White Plains and has produced some of the best songs released in the last few years.  For more, check out the Pitchfork news brief…

Danger Mouse produced The Black Keys’ last album Attack and Release.  Here’s a sweet cut off it, “Lies”…

Of course, Danger Mouse is probably best known for his work with Gnarls Barkley (his group with Cee-Lo), and I am absolutely in love with one of the songs from their latest album.  It’s called “No Time Soon”.  Listen to it HERE, and below watch a very cool alto saxophone cover of it that I found on Youtube.  Smooth…

As for James Mercer, well he’s one of the illest songwriters in the history of music.  The Shins are the shizz.  For more on them, CLICK ON THIS.  I’ll keep you posted on this pairing as more info surfaces.  Peace out.

*UPDATE*

Pardon me, but this is a sidebar of sorts.  A second bonus if you will.  The Black Keys are actually working on a rock/rap album right now, featuring Jim Jones, Mos Def, Rza, Raekwon, Q-Tip, and many other big hip hop names.  Dame Dash is very actively a part of the project too.  Check out these two documentary style videos with Mos Def in the studio….

Thanks to my old pal Jon Leib for the heads up on this project.  For more info and to keep up with the weekly webisodes, stay tuned to the link at the bottom…Also, check for the recent solo album from The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach titled Keep It Hid (cover below)…

For Fans of Flannel

Pearl Jam is back with a new album, Backspacer, and flannel shirts are back in style.  It’s like middle school all over again.  Truth is, for most of my friends, Pearl Jam and flannel shirts NEVER WENT OUT OF STYLE.  For me, I took a break from both, like lots of people did (I haven’t bought a Pearl Jam album since Vitalogy and all my flannel shirts got handed down to my sister back in her alternative years), but there’s a lot of positive vibes surrounding PJ’s new album.  They seem to be in a good place as a band, embracing new media, marketing, and business strategies (they inked a distribution deal with Target  for the album release and an all Pearl Jam Rock Band video game is in the works).  They even made a video for their first single!  Check it out below…

In celebration of this new release, let’s go back to where it all started and check out some classic jams from the original flannel years.  Here’s a couple of my favorites from the good old days…

Temple of the Dog “Hunger Strike” (Official Video)

Pearl Jam “Black” (Live)

Congrats to Pearl Jam on the recent success.  I know all their long time supporters are pumped for this new album.  Should be an awesome autumn for them.  As for flannel fans, well it looks like your time to shine has come back around this season.  Out with the autotune, in with the LL Bean…

JAYZ

Pearl Jam Backspacer is in stores now (album cover is sick).  And if you’re near a newsstand, cop the latest Spin Magazine.  Great cover story in there on them…hollerrrrrrrrrr.

Cracker Rapper

I’ll take a late pass on posting this video.  It’s a year and a half old, but it’s absolutely awesome.  Dirty Nasty “Cracker Ass Fantastic”.  Yeah, that’s Simon Rex from the old school MTV days for those of you not up on him.  He’s a hilarious white rapper, and surprisingly good.  And very fun.

And here, watch this clip of Dirt Nasty getting wrecked with Andy Milonakis and some dude Riff Raff from the show G’s to Gents (who is a total character).  They start freestyling for the camera around 1:40 in.  Looks like they were having a great time.  Funny flows.  Stupid, but funny.  “I’ll knock out L. Ron Hubbard”….hahahaha!!!!

More on Dirt Nasty HERE.  Uno…

Without a doubt, Eastbound and Down was the best new show on TV this year.  The problem is that it was only six episodes long.  The good news is that there is a season two in the works, but it probably won’t air until next year.  For now, let’s just thank the DVD gods for blessing us with so many hilarious deleted scenes and outtakes from the first season of the show.  Looks like they had a blast filming all this stuff.  Here’s some deleted scenes to start with…

Now check these outtake reels.  Will Ferrell is off the yelzabar!!!

Seriously, I could watch these all day.  How does anyone ever get through a scene with Will Ferrell without cracking up?  I guess the answer is….they don’t.  Finally, check out this bonus deleted scene with Stevie talking about how he banged a 90 year old woman at a nursing home.  Unreal.

Can’t wait for season two of Eastbound and Down.  Until then, I’ll have season one on heavy repeat.
