Sebastian Maniscalco on CONAN

Maniscalco does some new jokes on CONAN. This guy is great.

Merry Go Round

Late Pass, Music, The Good Old Days

Okay, my last post before I hit the hay. Damn I found some gems tonight! Here’s an oldie but goodie I discovered earlier on Soul Sides by The Equatics titled “Merry Go Round.” I’m loving this—thanks again to Oliver Wang for always coming with the ill selections.

Enjoy, and check below for more Thanksgiving throwbacks…

Squeeze First

Late Pass, Music, The Good Old Days

Going back-to-back with the rare radio freestyles. Listen to Roc Marciano catch a body on Squeeze Radio back in ’04 over Common’s Large Professor-produced “Resurrection (Extra P. Remix)” instrumental—this shit is bananas.

Berkeley Roots

The Roots

The Thanksgiving gems keep coming. Here’s an on-air freestyle from 1994 live on KALX in Berkeley, California featuring The Roots’ Black Thought on the mic and Rahzel on the beatbox. Thanks to Oliver Wang for preserving the audio—very fun. Listen below.

I Can’t Help It

Late Pass, Music, The Good Old Days

I’m on the hunt for gems this holiday weekend, so here’s the first of what will hopefully amount to a decent handful. Check out Stevie Wonder’s in-studio demo version of “I Can’t Help It,” a song he wrote for Michael Jackson’s classic Off The Wall album that was also sampled on De La Soul’s hypnotic Buhloone Mindstate single “Breakadawn.” Awesome.

Cymande on KCRW

Late Pass, Music, The Good Old Days, Videos

The self-titled Cymande compilation is one of my favorite discs ever. It infiltrated our crew during our early college years, and became the soundtrack to our late teens and twenties. From winter cyphers to summer road trips, it got extended burn throughout—I even sampled one of the songs on my first Stan Ipcus album. And I still listen to it all the time. In fact, I was just talking about them with my boy Matis the other day.

Anyway, pardon the randomness of this post, but last night I came across a couple sweet live Cymande videos from an in-studio session at KCRW earlier this year that I’d like to share. Check them out performing “The Message” up top, and “Bra” below. Enjoy, and watch the full performance HERE.

Saks Fifth Ave

Late Pass, Music

I just got hip to this Chris Crack shit from a couple years back after peeping an impressive live video of him performing it. This dude is too underrated—he’s got pure rap talent and knows how to make dope tracks. Enjoy, and check out “Pine Cones” if you missed it, I still got that one in heavy rotation.

Bodmon

Comedy, Late Pass, Music, Videos

In my recent interview with comedian Brandon Wardell, he included a Ramriddlz song as one of the joints he had in Heavy Rotation. And it made me realize that other than “Sweeterman”, the unbelievable original version of the well-known Drake song, I had never really checked out any other Ramriddlz stuff.

So last week, I jumped in a Ramriddlz YouTube rabbit hole, and “Bodmon” immediately became my new favorite of his. That, and this ridiculous interview below. What a hoot…

Mieke

Late Pass, Music, The Good Old Days

Been steady listening to this Flake Music cut since James Mercer mentioned it in a recent interview as a favorite from his early days. For those unaware, Flake Music was the band Mercer was in before he started The Shins, and their one and only album was reissued on Sub Pop in 2014. Check it out.
