Leading Ladies

Uncategorized

There’s a lot of dope music out right now, and a lot of it is being made by females! Who run the world? GIRLS. Here are three of my favorite songs out that are right now, all featuring a leading lady. Up top is a cover of Beyonce’s “Party” by Brooklyn band Chairlift, led by Caroline Polachek and featuring Das Racist rapper Kool A.D. who spits a fun verse. I like how they flipped this. And below, check out a great cut by newcomer Meg Myers called “Monster.” This shit is tough…

Also, watch the video for this smooth song from another newbie, Yuna, called “Live Your Life,” produced by the one and only Pharrell Williams…

Shouts to Pigeons & Planes, a new site I’m working with, for putting me on to all three of these songs/videos. Bookmark it. Now. I’m out.

*UPDATE*

Another female led gem found on P&P. It’s by Wild Belle and it’s called “Keep You.” Fire…

Battle Stories

Interviews, Published Material

I had an interesting interview published last week on Complex with battle rap monster Iron Solomon, who told me the stories behind his Top 5 battles of all time. It’s an interesting read, and you can watch all the battles above each story in the feature. Here’s my intro, and the link is below…

You probably remember the first time you saw Iron Solomon in a rap battle. Whether it was live on the streets or online, there’s no question you were instantly captivated. Sure, he’s a white guy with glasses who can rap his ass off, but that’s not the only draw. With Iron Solomon, it’s deeper than rap, and larger than race. He has the ability to break down any opponent, on the spot, all the time, with no fear.

Iron Solomon, who grew up in Manhattan on the Upper West Side aka South Harlem (shout to ItsTheReal), started on the battle scene in his late teens by hitting up well known Manhattan-based open mics and competitions like Braggin’ Rights and End of the Weak, making a name for himself as a skilled lyricist with a knack for humorous couplets and witty punchlines.

After taking out underground legend Immortal Technique in his late teens, Iron Solomon got the taste for blood, and went on to verse anyone and everyone who presented a challenge, eventually dethroning the Asian assassinJin at New York’s premiere battleground Fight Klub with thousands of dollars on the line.

From there, Solomon was in high demand for big-time rap battles. He made an unforgettable appearance onSmack DVD at Fat Beats in New York against the roughest, toughest battler on the scene, Math Hoffa (who had literally knocked out his previous opponent with a fist to the face). He jaw jousted with 106 & Park championAvalanche in Detroit. He went toe to toe in Miami with Philly street sweeper (and MTV’s Making The Bandalumnus) E. Ness, all of which garnered hundreds of thousands of video views (his battle with E. Ness currently clocks in at 1.3 million clicks). Thanks to YouTube, we can all enjoy his various roastings endlessly.

Iron Solomon has been planning to step away from the battle scene to focus on recording for some time. Now he’s gearing up to release his debut album Monster on March 27th through Royal (Iron’s imprint) and a partnership with 3D (a subsidiary of Duck Down).

As he makes his transition from the streets to the studio, we asked him to tell the tales behind his Top 5 Battles Of All Time. From the set-up, to the comeback, to the final punchline, it’s all here.

Matisyahu Takes Tarrytown

Events, My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

Matis put on a very special performance in Tarrytown last week in support of Westhab (run by his father), gathering his homeboys Moshe, Aaron, and Rob onstage for semi-stripped down set. Matis rocked most of the show on a stool, and sounded better than ever. But the highlight of the night was when he invited a young kid, Luke Weber, on stage to sing “One Day.” Luke, who you can tell from his bald head is going through some tough times, brought the house down. It was quite a moment. Watch the video above. And oh yeah, I made an appearance too. I must say Luke was a tough act to follow though. But spitting “Let’s Walk” with Moshe on drums is always a winner. Felt good to be back on stage with the mic. Doesn’t happen that often anymore. Check a little iPhone crowd footage snippet below for proof…

Thanks to Matis for pulling your old pal on stage, and for hooking up my BGC kids with free tickets. Get well soon Luke! We’re all rooting for you!

Say What?

Youth

These “Shit ________ Say” videos are all the rage right now, eh? I need a late pass for posting this, but I love “Shit New Yorkers Say,” which pokes fun at pretentious New York City residents. Really well done. Watch it above. And it inspired me to make a “Things BGC Kids Say” video with the middle schoolers I work with, and they did a great job with the whole concept and took some quality jabs at themselves. There’s some budding talent in this crew. Watch below…

Also, love this one “Shit Toddlers Say.” My son Luca is gonna be two in May, so I can relate to a lot of this. He loves watching it too, probably because the little girl in it is super cute. Check it…

Catching up on posts. More coming asap. Hollerrrrrr.

Re-interpreting a Legend

Interviews, My Dudes, Published Material, Youth

As part of Complex’s J Dilla Tribute Week, I interviewed this dude Brian “Raydar” Ellis, a teacher at Berklee School of Music in Boston who leads the first and only J Dilla Ensemble, where students re-interpret music from Dilla’s catalog using live instrumentation. I’ve never been the hugest Dilla fan, but I certainly respect his work and what he contributed to hip-hop, and think it’s really cool that a traditional music institution like Berklee is branching out a bit and offering courses like this to its students. Raydar and I had an interesting discussion about the J Dilla Ensemble and its inception, and what goes on inside the classroom. We also talked about what sets J Dilla apart from other legendary hip-hop producers, and his contributions to A Tribe Called Quest’s catalog. This is a must read for Dilla fans, and people who may not know enough about his greatness. Take a glimpse at the future of music education, hip-hop style!

Check out my boy J Swiss’ Dilla tribute song/video, “Geek Down,” off his This 1 Is 4 Dilla mixtape, which dropped the same day as the feature above. Swiss is doing his thing down at UNC-Chapel Hill, and still reppin’ Dobbs Ferry and the 914 heavy…

RIP J Dilla.

It’s Only Life

Uncategorized

James Mercer is making the rounds it seems, promoting the late March release of The Shins’ new album Port Of Morrow. He’s been hitting up different radio stations and such, playing acoustic versions of Shins classics, and new cuts from the album. I came across some pretty decent video/audio of Mercer performing a brand new song called “It’s Only Life” live in Hollywood at some 987FM event. Check the footage above. Also, listen to the official leak of “September,” the b-side to their first single “Simple Song,” below. It’s seriously incredible…

Can’t wait to hear this album in full. Later skaters.

Be Mine

Uncategorized

Alabama Shakes is a new band buzzing on the indie scene, and I like their style. Their lead singer, Brittany Howard, sounds like the female reincarnation of Joe Cocker. She’s got soul, for real. And the band’s soulful too, with hints of country, blues, and southern rock stylings that make for a unique, live sound reminiscent of The Black Crowes in their prime. I’m digging the live version of this song “Be Mine” (performed in studio at KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic) which I’m assuming is on their upcoming debut album Boys & Girls due out in April. Keep your eye out for this crew. They’re dope. And shout to all the lovers out their reppin’ hard for their partners. This is another Valentine’s Day weekend jam for you.

A Case Of You

The Good Old Days

For all of you hopeless romantics out there celebrating Valentine’s Day weekend, this one is for you. James Blake covers Joni Mitchell’s classic Blue album cut “A Case of You” on his new Enough Thunder EP, and it is truly a beautiful rendition. Love the piano on this. Check the video above, featuring actress Rebecca Hall who you will recognize from Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona. And below is a clip of Joni Mitchell playing “A Case Of You” live in London…

This post has a few family connections for me. First off, Blue is one of my Mom’s favorite albums, and I have great memories of listening to this with her on family car rides etc. Also, as my Mom pointed out when I sent this to her last night, many people say Rebecca Hall looks a lot like my sister Rebecca, which I think is a bit true (my sister’s prettier). And also, every time I listen to James Blake’s version, I think of my own wife, who I am forever falling in love with. Great song. Props to James Blake for doing it justice. LOVE.

Lin-sanity!

Sports

Jeremy Lin has been an unlikely hero for the Knicks this week. With Amar’e and Melo both out, and their record well below .500, Lin stepped in and took over, leading the Knicks to four straight victories with four extremely impressive 20 plus point performances (mad assists too), capped by last night’s 38 point effort against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. New York is literally in a frenzy over this Harvard alumnus, who came out of nowhere and took the NBA by storm. It’s Lin-credible! Here are his highlights from last night’s win against the Lakers…

We’ll have to see how Lin does when Amar’e and Melo get back, but this is a good sign for the Knicks. We finally found a point guard! And his game is Lin-sane!

*UPDATE*

Lin’s game-winner against the Raptors was unreal…

Subway Soul

Uncategorized

My dude kills Adele’s “Someone Like You” on the 86th Street subway platform in NYC. Absolutely murders it, vocals and drum only. Shout to the good folks at Complex Magazine for putting me on. And crack up below to some guy on the subway rapping along to Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Niggas In Paris” he’s off the hook! Major LOL!

Only in New York. Hollerrrr.
