Word To The Mutha!

Mixes, Music, The Good Old Days, Videos

I missed the The New Edition Story on BET last week, but still got caught up in the nostalgia that surrounded it on social media. Which brought me back to this Bell Biv Devoe jam from the early ’90s that served as a reunion for the group, “Word to the Mutha!” I loved this song/video so much in middle school, and I’m glad to say it still knocks. Enjoy, then peep Mister Cee’s New Edition tribute mix below…

Wave One

Music

I’ve always been a John Mayer fan—the guy makes good music. And his new EP Wave One has a couple really nice cuts on it. Check out “Moving On and Getting Over” above, which feels like a bit of a return to his Continuum days. And “You’re Gonna Live Forever” kind of reminds me of Tobias Jesso Jr.’s stuff, with John reaching for the piano keys instead of his guitar. Kick back and enjoy, then go listen to the whole EP on Spotify or wherever you stream your music—it’s out now.

Soul Meets Reggae

Music

Here are a couple random reggae joints I’ve been bumping recently, both with soulful roots. Vibe out above to The Far East’s cover of Little Ann’s gem “Deep Shadows,” and a Ticklah-produced reworking of Bob & Gene’s “I Can Be Cool” below. Nothing that new, just some shit I’ve been meaning to share. Enjoy.

Wrap It Up

Advertising, Music, My Dudes

I’ve been making music with my man Max Bent since we were kids in college, so I’m pretty psyched to share this new Trojan Condoms radio ad we created together for Valentine’s Day. 100% beatbox baby! Airing now until February 14th.

Darling

Music

One of my favorite bands—Real Estate—returns with their new single titled “Darling.” If you like this and want to hear more, go check out their last album Atlas, it’s excellent. And stay tuned for In Mind, coming soon.

Pressuring Her Is Corny

SHIRT drops a timely cut about respecting women. Not many rappers can flip a serious issue and still make it sound fly—props.

Snowing in LA

Music

Here’s a very, very dope new rap song featuring Denmark Vessey on the mic and Earl Sweatshirt on the beat. It’s a bonus cut off the upcoming vinyl release of Denny’s 2015 album Martin Lucid Dream, available for pre-order now on the Fat Beats site. Listen above.
