Curb Your Enthusiasm, aka MY FAVORITE TELEVISION SHOW, finally returns this Sunday with its 7th season.  Larry’s trying to get his wife back!!!  Will he be able to?!?  But what people are more interested in, and rightfully so, is the Seinfeld cast reunion that is taking place this season.  Jerry and the rest of the gang are all back in action.  Watch these two preview videos to find out more.  First, go “On The Set” during the upcoming season, and below that take a more in depth look at the Seinfeld reunion.  Looks like they’re pulling out the old sets for this one…

Answer The Call

Events

JayZ_MadisonSq_1

Jay-Z’s Answer The Call 9/11 Benefit Concert live broadcast on Fuse TV last night might have been the most amazing thing I’ve ever watched on television.  It was aired with no commercial breaks in its entirety.  My wife and I kicked back in the comfort of our humble abode and watched the whole thing over take out Greek food, and completely loved every minute of it.  He has so many hits!!!!!  Just on his new album alone he has more stadium rockers than most seasoned rap veterans.  And the rest of his career catalog is ridiculous.  Not to mention all the thrilling guest appearances.  Here’s some clips of my favorite moments from the show…

*Kid Cudi came out early on and did his thing on “Already Home”, which is slowly but surely becoming one of my favorite tracks on Blueprint 3

*John Mayer?!?!?!?!?!?  Yes!!!!!  I’m a fan of his, and I’ve seen him live before.  At first I was cracking up at the hip hop guitar face he was making, but he was really awesome.  He rocked “You Don’t Know” and then murdered the sample on “D.O.A.” (he played a nice medley in betweeen too)….

*Rihanna and Kanye West touched the stage for “Run This Town”.  That was my wife’s favorite part!  One of mine too.  It was, as they say, EPIC.  Kanyeezy added on with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Good Life” also…

*Beyonce is sooooooooo ill.  Her appearance was brief, but extremely memorable.  Check her dance moves on “Diva”, especially right at the end.  Wow…

*Jay-Z killed every song.  Don’t think that because I’m not posting his solo performances he didn’t.  As I said before, HE HAS SO MANY HITS!!!!  And there were some heartwarming moments too in memory of 9/11.  Check the link at the bottom to watch the whole concert online via Nahright.  But to wrap things up here, I want to post how he ended the show.  It was fantastic.  After bringing Diddy out for “Encore”, Hov turned up the house lights and gave shout outs to different people he spotted in all parts of the audience, cracking jokes with them and of course showing lots of love.  Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Jay-Z really is the greatest rapper of all time.  I love Biggie just as much as the next guy, but I’m not sure he could have ever gotten to the level that Jay-Z has.  Even Diddy admitted last night that Jay-Z is “The King”.  I was at Jay-Z’s star studded Fade To Black MSG concert back in 2003 and I felt the same way then.  And now, six years later, he’s bigger than ever, with yet another classic album on the shelf, and too many accomplishments in music and business to list.  Plus he’s a great guy.  A real people person.  I’ve been posting lots of his interviews and videos and music in the past couple months (this past three weeks especially), and I’m sure this won’t be the last of them.  Hollerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr….

90’s Grab Bag Volume Two

ghostmilk312

Yeah boooooyyyyyy!  I’m back with my second volume of 90’s Grab Bag.  I’m really loving this series because it gives me an excuse to watch old videos.  I totally heart 90’s hip hop.  It’s hard to pick just five, but that’s my format and I’m sticking to it.  I threw a Jay-Z and a Wu video in the mix in honor of their recent releases (Ghostface has a new disc coming out at the end of the month and of course Raekwon’s just dropped).  It’s cool to see guys from this era still making classic albums.  And I had to sneak in some west coast representation too (like I did last Grab Bag with The Nonce “Mix Tapes”), and of course some straight NYC street bangers.  Peep the crazy cameos in the Fat Joe video at the bottom (Nas, Big L, Raekwon, etc.)…enjoy.

Jeru The Damaja “D. Original”

Ghostface Killah featuring Raekwon and Cappadonna “Camay”

Jay-Z “Where I’m From”

Dr. Dre “Let Me Ride”

Fat Joe “Success”

If you missed it, here’s 90’s Grab Bag Volume One.  See you next month with my next installment.  Dirty Jax where you at son?!?!?!?!?

This dude is hilarious.  Zach Galifianakis.  I watched The Hangover for the second time on the plane back from San Francisco and enjoyed it even more, mostly because of him.  Now he has a major role in the new HBO series Bored To Death with Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson.  I’m excited for this.  Here’s the trailer…

I went and did some research on my new favorite bearded (and chubby) funny man, and turns out he’s been around for a while, and he’s got a remarkable comedy steez.  I really like this talk show he hosts called Between Two Ferns.  Here’s two episodes that I thought were his best.  First is his interview with Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) and second is with Jon Hamm from Mad Men, which is a show I really want to start watching because lots of people that I know and respect tells me it’s excellent.  Anyway, check these out.  LOL!

Finally, watch this clip of a younger and unbearded Zach Galifianakis doing stand up comedy for a group of pre-school kids.  Fun!

I Left My Heart In San Francisco

The Good Old Days

gma1309

My Grandma Sooky passed away last week, just shy of her 91st birthday.  Time stopped, and we all went west to San Francisco to be together as a family, and lay her to rest.  It was an emotional Labor Day weekend, but also one of the most amazing times I have ever spent with my family, capped off by an evening of watching my Mom play old standards and showtunes on the piano while my Aunt Karen and Aunt Judy led a family singalong in grand cabaret fashion.  Lots of laughs, and even more tears.  I love you and miss you so much Grandma, but your spirit lives on in all of us Isenbergs and Trattners and Dolds.  Here’s the amazing eulogy my father wrote and read at her service.  It’s beautiful, and it will give those of you reading this who did or did not know Sooky a sweet look at her wonderful life…

gma1311

OH SOOKY……YOU DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO LEAVE.  NOT SURPRISING THAT YOU WOULD DECIDE THAT IT WAS TIME TO GO AS WE ALWAYS KNEW THAT YOU WERE IN THE “DRIVER’S SEAT” ON MOST MATTERS.  STILL, YOU STAYED WITH US FOR MORE THAN 90 YEARS AND THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE RUN FOR YOU, OUR MOST TALENTED FRIEND, MOTHER, MOTHER IN LAW, GRANDMOTHER AND OF COURSE, REAL ESTATE ENTREPENEUR!  FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS, I KNEW YOU AS THE “HUSBAND OF GAIL” AND THEN, “DAN AND BECCA’S” DAD.  THOUGH MOST MEN IN THE TRATTNER WORLD ONLY PLAY A LIMITED ROLE IN THIS LONG RUNNING FEMALE DRAMA, I WAS ALWAYS PLEASED WHEN WE HAD A MOMENT OR TWO TO OUR SELVES ON THE TRATTNER FAMILY STAGE.

WHEN I FIRST MET YOU, YOU WERE LIVING A SAN FRANCISCO LIFE FROM YOUR SEACLIFF ABODE OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN GATE.  YOUR GIRLS, JUDY, GAIL, KAREN AND DEBRA, WERE MAKING THEIR WAY IN MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, BUT FORTUNATELY HAD LEARNED MANY IMPORTANT SURVIVAL SKILLS FROM THEIR MOM.  THEY ALL HAD YOUR TENACITY, PERSERVERANCE AND OF COURSE, BEAUTIFUL, CAPIVATING GOOD LOOKS.  THEY HAD LEARNED FROM YOU HOW TO CARE FOR THEMSELVES, BUT ALSO THE VALUE OF WOMANHOOD AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY.  THEY LOVED YOU, YOUR MOM (GRANDMA ROSE) AND SOMETIMES OTHER MEMBERS OF YOUR CLAN WHO WANDERED INTO AND OUT OF THEIR LIVES.  THE CONSTANT FACTOR WAS YOU, THE PILLAR OF MOTHERHOOD AND WOMANHOOD THAT STOOD STRONG IN SPITE OF THE TRICKY WINDS OF A LIFE OF SAN FRANCISCO.

gma1310

AS OUR YEARS PASSED, WE HAD MANY WONDERFUL MOMENTS TOGETHER AS WE SHARED THE JOYS OF SAN FRANCISCO LIFE.  ON YOUR 65TH BIRTHDAY, THEN MAYOR FEINSTEIN DECLARED “SOOKY TRATTNER” DAY IN SAN FRANCISCO.  YOU AND ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND BUSINESS PARTNERS CAME TOGETHER TO ENJOY A PETER MINTIN SERENADE FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY, A SONG OR TWO ACTUALLY SUNG BY YOU AND THEN A SERIES OF “CAMPY” TOASTS THAT PROBABLY MADE MAYOR DIANE A BIT NERVOUS…..ADMITTEDLY, ME TOO.

YOUR LIFE CONTINUED WITH REAL ESTATE SUCCESSES, JOYS BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR DAUGHTERS AND OF COURSE, NUMEROUS SAN FRANCISCO GALAS, DEBUTS, MASKED BALLS AND EVENINGS OF ENTERTAINMENT AND FRIENDLY REVELRY.  IN THE MIDST OF ALL OF THIS CRESCENDO OF PLEASURE, YOU ALSO SHOWED US HOW TO MOURN FOR FRIENDS, ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR HARD WORKING LABOR, AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER WHEN TIMES WERE TOUGH.  YOU SHARED YOUR “SEKEL” (COMMON SENSE) AND IN MANY INSTANCES, YOUR HARD EARNED CASH.  YOU WATCHED OUT FOR YOUR DAUGHTERS AND MADE SURE THAT THEY KNEW RIGHT FROM WRONG EVEN IF WRONG SOMETIMES MADE SENSE TOO!  YOU ALSO INSURED YOUR OWN INDEPENDENCE BY ESTABLISHING YOURSELF AS A FORMIDABLE REAL ESTATE BROKER AND A PERSON THAT HAD FOSTERED YOUR OWN UNIQUE STYLE OF LIVING AND LOVING!

CIMG1607

AND THEN YOUR LIFE TURNED FROM GREAT BUSINESS SUCCESS TO NEW JOYS OF GRANDMOTHERHOOD AND A CHANCE TO SHARE YOUR WARMTH AND SWEETNESS WITH TWO GRANDCHILDREN, THAT IS REBECCA AND DAN.  AS YOU GREW OLDER, YOU OPENED UP TO NEW COMMITMENTS FROM YOUR DAUGHTERS TO ASSIST YOU IN SHARING THEIR LOVE WITH YOU. THEY INTRODUCED YOU TO SOME NEW MEN THAT WERE CALLED THEIR HUSBANDS AND OF COURSE, THE HUSBANDS BROUGHT THEIR FAMILIES INTO YOUR WORLD.  I KNOW THAT YOU HAD GREAT LOVE FOR DAVID’S CREW AS THEY EMBRACED YOU AS ONE OF THEIR OWN.  MEMORABLE MOMENTS WERE THE VISITS FROM THE “OUT OF TOWN” DAUGHTERS AS YOU FOUND JOY IN THEIR VISITS AS EACH DAUGHTER BROUGHT A DIFFERENT SPIRIT AND ENERGY TO THEIR SPECIAL TIME SPENT ONLY WITH YOU.  OF COURSE, YOUR “IN TOWN” DAUGHTER BROUGHT YOU DAILY DOSES OF LOVE AND SOME GOOD FOOD TOO, SO IT WAS CLEAR THAT SOOKY AND HER DAUGHTERS WAS ALWAYS A WINNING COMBINATION.

SO NOW THE FLAGS ARE AT HALF MAST, THE BELLS ARE MUFFLED, AND WE QUIETLY SHED OUR TEARS FOR THE LOSS OF OUR DEAR SOOKY.  WE HAD A GLORIOUS EVENING ABOUT A YEAR AGO WHEN WE CELEBRATED YOUR 90TH.  IT WAS A SPECIAL NIGHT WITH A MAGNIFICENT OUTPOURING OF LOVE FOR YOU.  CLEARLY YOU WERE TICKLED BY THE COMEDY/MUSICAL SKETCH OF DEBRA AND OF COURSE, THE MOMENT WHEN YOUR FOUR DAUGHTERS STOOD SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH YOU TO  DEMONSTRATE THEIR UNIFIED COMMITMENT AND LOVE FOR THEIR SOOKY.  SO IT’S TIME TO REST, TIME TO MOURN, TIME TO SAY GOOD BYE TO OUR SOOKY……WE MAY SAY GOOD BYE BUT ALL OF US WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU BECAUSE YOU WERE THE SAN FRANCISCO ORIGINAL, THE REAL THING, AND OUR MOTHER, MOTHER IN LAW AND GRANDMOTHER……WE COULDN’T ASK FOR MORE FROM YOU AND WE WILL ALWAYS BE THANKFUL FOR YOU AND YOUR LIFE.

Tuesday With Hovie

Interviews, My Dudes

In celebration of the release of Blueprint 3, Jay-Z paid a long awaited visit to the Hot 97 Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg Morning Show.  They greeted Hov wearing suits, and offered up wine and cheese while discussing all the latest news surrounding him, from the new album to his relationship with Barack Obama to his recent interviews with Oprah Winfrey and Bill Maher, and much more.  Check part one of the Hot 97 video footage above (I’ll update this post as more footage goes up), and the audio link to the full interview below (props to Dre at Nahright for that)…

Jay-Z on Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg Hot 97 Morning Show

Though I won’t be in the building for Jay-Z’s 9/11 Benefit Concert at MSG, I’m definitely looking forward to watching it on Fuse TV this Friday night.  Don’t miss it!

*UPDATE*

Here’s parts two and three from the interview:

The latest release from Brooklyn based soul music label Daptone Records comes from Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens.  It’s called “What Have You Done” off the album What Have You Done, My Brother.  I first heard about Naomi Shelton from a family friend back in the spring, who told me she was famous for doing these amazing live shows in some church basement in Manhattan.  Shelton’s kinda old, but she’s got soul, man.  She looks like she could be labelmate Sharon Jones‘ auntie, and sounds like that too.  I just copped their new album, and look forward to giving it some serious burn.  Above is the Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens video for “What Have You Done”, and below is an EPK Daptone Records put together so you can get a feel for their deal…

*Bonus*

This is the latest video from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for their song “Tell Me”…

Check out Daptone Records website for their other releases if you’re into this type of soul music.  They have a solid artist roster…

I missed Adventureland when it was in the theaters, but I watched it twice on DVD in the past week and I’m giving it the official Westcheddar TWO THUMBS UP.  I really enjoyed it.  Great cast, great story, and it’s beautifully shot.  Lots of funny and romantically heartwarming moments.  Check the trailer below and then go rent or buy or Netflix (that’s a verb) the DVD asap…

Big props to the stars of the movie (pictured below), Jesse Eisenberg (that’s how people always spell MY last name wrong hahahaha) and Kristen Stewart (best known for her role in Twilight).  These are two young actors to watch for in the future.

Watch this interview with them at Sundance Film Festival, where they talk a little more in depth about their characters….

That’s all for now folks.  Peace out.

Is there a better tag team tandem in rap music than Raekwon and Ghostface?  I don’t think so.  And the recent leak of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II certainly will help my argument.  Holy cow.  I was nervous about this project because I’ve always felt strongly that Wu albums should be produced entirely by Rza (who came through and definitely did his thing on “New Wu” and the groovy “Black Mozart”).  But there’s a bunch of incredible beats on there by other seasoned beatmakers (Pete Rock, Alchemist, Scram Jones, Marley Marl, Erick Sermon), and even some by up and coming producers that I don’t know much about.  And the raps are so tough man.  Wow.  Raekwon shines the brightest on epic solos like “Sonny’s Missing”, “Surgical Gloves”, and “Canal Street”.  Of course Ghostface is on a handful of songs and comes correct with all his bars (as does Rae’s other Wu family members), and I love Beanie Sigel’s verse on “Have Mercy” and Jada’s on “Broken Safety”.  Lots more crack on there too, and I think very quickly this will be considered a classic album as a whole.  It’s very strong, though towards the end I kinda wish Rae cut it short (the Dr. Dre production in my opinion is kind of wack).  A few too many tracks, that’s my only critique.  Less is more.

raekwon_source995

Still, I’m very impressed by the production slash rhymes, and happy to have something on the other side of the New York street rap spectrum to balance out Jay-Z’s brilliant but more commercial Blueprint 3.  And any reunification of Raekwon and Ghostface on a record is instantly ill.  They still sound as fresh as they did on the first Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (peep the pics above from their younger days).  Here’s one of my favorite cuts (I’d post more songs but there are too many heaters on there), featuring Rae and Ghost going back and forth about being in jail, appropriately titled “Penitentiary”…

*Bonus*

From the first Wu Tang Clan album, check out the video for Rae and Ghost’s duet “Can It Be All So Simple”, directed by Hype Williams…

GO COP THAT ALBUM SON!!!!!  IT DROPS TUESDAY!!!

Ok, again I have to apologize for another Jay-Z post, but Blueprint 3 leaked today, and it’s exciting!  There’s something about getting my hands on exclusive music that gives me a nostalgic feeling, like when DJ Clue tapes used to come out back in high school and there would be a new Biggie song to start off Side A.  I remember stopping to see Black at his tape spot on Fordham Rd. back in ’99 and he gave us In My Lifetime Vol. 3 on CD like a month before it dropped.  That was crazy.  And I had Blueprint (the first one) dumb early too.  Today it’s different.  Anyone can get something early, if you know the right spots to go on the internet.  You don’t have to go to the hood, the hood comes to you!  I’ll let you find it on your own, but you can sample my two favorites below, that is of the ones I hadn’t heard before today.  “Thank You” is really dope.  Like, REALLY DOPE.  And “Hate” is some next shit, featuring Kanye West, which I’m digging too.  They kinda go back and forth on it in a fly way.  Both songs are produced by Kanye West (“Thank You” is co-produced by No I.D.) and hit me the hardest during my first listening session.  Enjoy, and of course, check out the Rhapsody sponsored commercial above for Blueprint 3 where Hov changes clothes to recreate each of his album covers.  It’s very well done.  Cheah!

“Thank You”

“Hate”

Shout out to my boy J. Tunas, one of the biggest Jay-Z fans I know, and my boy Kareem down in Maryland, who is the other biggest Jay-Z fan I know.  To the rest of you, I promise the next post won’t have anything to do with Jay-Z.  Maybe.
