Oh yeah, did I mention that I’m on this shit?  Stan Ipcus and DJ Roz go way back.  He was a couple years younger than me growing up in WP, and I always knew him as the kid with the Tommy Hilfiger shirts that hung out with my boy Greg from Ogden Avenue.  Then, in ’98, he came to College Park, and ever since we’ve been tight.  I remember the first time we really hung out, we went to DC to see Hieroglyphics at this club, and Roz kept it real and hopped in the B-boy circle and started breakdancing.  That’s when I knew he was hip hop for real hahaha.  Then, after we got jerked trying to get a radio show at WMUC, we started doing our own live shows on campus, at Frat parties, and at local clubs in the area.  Roz would DJ, I would spit, and K-Wet would wild out!  And of course, we’d bring up guests too, like Max B, Al Jiggy, Nef, Bless, Uno, Heem, B.O., Kalash, and Matty Mill (Matisyahu pre-beard).  Those were the days.  Then of course, Roz and I made the classic Stan Ipcus mixtape Real Breezy in 2006 and even did a couple shows in NYC to promote it which was fun.  So when it was time to give him an exclusive for Champion Sounds, you know I had to come through.  Thanks to Roz for putting me on his new mixtape and giving an old pal some shine.  Shit is sick.  WP stand up!  DMV stand up!  Peace..

Prodigy Returns

Interviews

Prodigy, one half of Mobb Deep and quite possible my favorite rapper of all time, was released from prison earlier this year after serving a three year sentence for a gun charge.  During his time locked up, Pee finished writing his autobiography, The Infamous Life, which is now in stores as of yesterday (jacket above).  He also just put out The Ellsworth Bumpy Johnson EP, a free batch of seven new songs, produced mostly by his teammates The Alchemist and Sid Roams, to coincide with the release of his book (via Complex.com, see cover below).  The EP is the same kind of murderous material a Prodigy/Mobb Deep fan would expect, but there are very slight hints of a more mature, introspective rapper too, which is a good thing.  And the book, well, I’m four chapters in and I can’t put it down.  He’s got some really interesting and wild stories of growing up on both sides of the tracks, battling illness, and of course, thugging it out with his crew while pursuing his dreams of rap stardom.  I imagine that once the book gets into his life as a rap superstar, it will only get better.  Shout to my wife for giving it to me yesterday as a two year wedding anniversary present.  Check the links below to buy the book online, download the free EP, and read the detailed Complex interview with the man himself…

Complex has been killing it lately, right?  I’m glad to be affiliated.  Oh yeah, have you heard Mobb Deep’s latest collaboration “Dog Shit” with fellow QB brethren Nas, produced by The Alchemist?  This is a must listen:

Look for more Mobb Deep music coming soon.  Supposedly Prodigy has 20 albums worth of material written from when he was behind bars and already over 70 songs recorded in the short time since he’s been out.  That’s what’s up, dun.

Hype Jews

Interviews

I love a good podcast episode, it’s true.  I’ve featured a few on Westcheddar in the past, and this one is certainly worthy of some shine.  Hype Men, a hip hop/comedy podcast hosted by the Rosenthal Brothers from ItsTheReal (Westcheddar Interview Alumni who grew up in Harrison) and their buddy Jenson Karp (who is a former white rapper), had some pretty cool guests on the show in its first year, from producer Just Blaze to comedian Hannibal Burress.  But last week, the boys brought in by far their most intriguing guest yet, a man I’ve written about here on Westcheddar before, Fat Jew.  Here’s their description of the episode:

TV personality / actor / former rapper Fat Jew joins the Hype Men to discuss Duck Down Records + beefing with nice white rappers + Paul Barman’s je ne sais quoi + how much we hate Jewish spoofs + sneaking into a Jamiroquai concert + freestyling circles in high school + unintentional gay rap lyrics + friends who love Fat Jew but hate his rapping + prank calling Bono + the funniest 5 minutes on Hype Men ever + much, much more!

It’s basically an insane overload of Jewish hip hop nerdery, and Fat Jew makes it a very funny listen.  He’s quite a character.  Oh, did I mention that they name drop Stan Ipcus while trying to list as many white rappers as they can think of?  Hahahaha, they do.  Click the link below to listen/download:

*Passover Bonus*

This kid is a middle school student at Solomon Schechter (where I teach once a week in Greenburgh), and his music video is making lots of noise on the internet.  Made in celebration of his recent Bar Mitzvah, “I’m Zack” already has over 300,00 views in one month!  Check it out…

Shins Shizz

Events

I’m one of the biggest Shins fans on the planet.  So when I heard James Mercer (lead singer) played a new song of theirs at a recent benefit concert in Portland, I got super open.  Not to be confused with THESE.  Check out the performance of the untitled song above, it’s verrry niiiiice.  Video isn’t the best, but the audio quality is clean.  And for good measure, I thought I’d post a classic live performance of “When I Goosestep” from 2004, which happens to be one of my favorite Shins songs (the stripped down version not the Wicker Park version, duh).  I’m such a Shins nerd…

Hopefully that new Shins album will be coming out sometime this year.  Actually, James Mercer and Danger Mouse’s group Broken Bells just dropped a little EP Meyrin Fields.  Listen to the best song off it, “Windows”, HERE.  And I’ve been waiting for a reason to post this James Mercer interview he did with himself a few years back (during the Chutes Too Narrow days).  Weird but cool.  Watch!

By the way, in somewhat related news, I got my hands on that new Fleet Foxes album, and it’s pretty fuckin’ dope.  Cop that May 3rd.  Uno.

*UPDATE*

Paste Magazine just put out a list of their Top Ten Shins Songs (So Far).  Props to them for putting the stripped-down recording above of “When I Goosestep” at #1!  Read/listen HERE.

Beat The Cel-tics!

Sports

The Knicks are in the NBA playoffs for the first time in seven years, and here in New York everyone is fired up.  It’s been a fun season, filled with highlights, winning streaks, slumps, trades, and controversy.  But most importantly, the Knicks made the playoffs, and their two superstars, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, are confident and poised to advance.  Check Amar’e up top on Live with Regis and Kelly, and Carmelo below with David Letterman, as they talk about their first round matchup against the Boston Celtics (among other things).  Both are fun interviews.  Nice to see the boys getting some love…

Ipcus Madness Recap

Events, Stan Ipcus

Well, Ipcus Madness is in the books, and the winner of the Greatest Stan Ipcus Song Of All Time is “The La Life”!  We started with a field of 64 songs, worked it down to the Sticky Sixteen, then the Final Forties, and finally, after many votes tallied on Facebook, Twitter, Email, Text, and BBM, there was one winner.  “The La Life”, Produced by my good bud Max B, and written and recorded during my Senior year at College Park (’99/2000), is a song about life as a young weed smoker.  It’s kind of the dark side of it all, truthfully.  And although I could have never predicted that it would take home the crown as GSISOAT, I’m proud of it, and consider it probably the realest song I ever wrote and recorded.  I guess the real always wins.  Shouts to “I Does This”, who lost in the finals by about 5 votes.   I was also surprised that song made it as far as it did, taking out “Real Ganja Talk” in the Sticky Sixteen.  But even with a low quality recording, and only clocking in at 1:38, it’s swag was on a hundred thousand million and almost took the title home.  Peep the Final Forties poster above (by Will Merchan), and the Sticky Sixteen below (by David Roy)…

I gotta say, when we got to the Sticky Sixteen, I was pretty happy with the songs that had gotten there.  I was surprised “Wifey Material” got knocked out in the first round (by “Don’t Mind Me Miss”), and “Chilly Chill” took out the Asher Roth diss which was also surprising, but all the #1 seeds were still in, and I really thought the bigger songs would overpower the rest of the field.  Then, “Real Ganja Talk” went down, “Hammer” went down, “Ippy Strut” went down, and “My Ferris Buellers” went down, all in the Sticky Sixteen, and I was stunned.  Wow, all the songs that I thought might win it all were knocked out.  The only one left that I thought had enough heat to take it all the way was “Pay U No Mind”, which ended up getting knocked out by one vote in the Final Forties by the champ.  I’d say “Chilly Chill” was the biggest surprise sleeper of the tournament, definitely didn’t even think it would make it out of the first round, though I do really like that track.  All in all, it was a fun last minute idea I had, that was executed well, and I loved the participation from not only old and new friends, but also just fans of Stan Ipcus music that I’ve never met personally.  Some really passionate peeps got involved, and that was super cool to see.  And props to Soundcloud, who’s embedding/link sharing and streaming game is so sick that it made the tournament run beautifully.  Here’s how the bracket finished out (props to Bracket Maker too):

IPCUS MADNESS FINAL BRACKET

Also, here’s the second verse of “The La Life”, which instantly brings me back to a cloudy day in College Park.  I actually wrote that verse as a poem for my History of Blues class, and read it for the entire lecture as part of a group presentation (Aaron McGruder, the creator of The Boondocks, was in my group).  I got an A.

When I get the blues I keep my eyes red with la to head,

hold it down for the fam, that’s what my Mom and Pop said,

what they don’t know only hurts them much more,

my daily walk is down the hill to get a Dutch from the store,

I stroll dolo in the Polo but why even get dipped,

herbs that pass me by you better chill or else you’ll get gipped,

honeys used to get a smile, now they get an ice frown,

saw my old girl last night, I just gave her a pound,

no convo, instead I stayed on the low,

only concern for right now is “Yo, where’s the dro?”

I wanna stoop it, lay up and get stupid,

used to be about the ladies until I lost my faith in Cupid,

love at first sight sounds alright until she spends the night,

seeing her again depends on if she keeps it tight,

I sleep it off, wake up and walk it off,

gips talk my ear off while I’m sitting sipping beer at The Loft,

I watch the ballgame, all these birds know our name,

thinking White Plains cats will send them down the Walk of Shame,

sure I bagged a couple, shagged the double D’s with matching bubble,

puffed some trees and stayed out of trouble,

now I stay burnt like siena,

got my mans in VA, Portland, Philly, NY, and Siena,

school be blowing mines, half the time I got my mind on dimes,

the kind and wine it keeps me feeling fine,

at high noon I rise, missed a class to get some ass,

what a relief, before I brush my teeth I twist some grass,

these girls got my head, school got my bread,

I need to get on track, instead I take a sack to head,

and that’s The La Life….

Thanks to everyone who participated in Ipcus Madness!  Mad love!!!!

Ocean Sounds

Uncategorized

Fleet Foxes new album Helplessness Blues is coming out in May, and their first video is now online for the world to enjoy.  FF is def one of the cooler and more talented new bands on the indie/folk/acoustic/rock scene (this will be their second full length release), and their video for “Grown Ocean” is a great glimpse into their world.  Watch above…

And in somewhat related music news, Frank Ocean is a young new soul artist who is part of California’s Odd Future camp (rapper Tyler The Creator is leading their movement with songs/vids like THIS).  Dude is buzzing heavy right now due to his OF affiliation and the high quality of his music.  He’s even been in the lab with Beyonce recently.  I’m digging these two songs off his solo release Nostalgia/Ultra, “Swim Good” (above) and “Novocane” (below).  Frank Ocean ladies and gentlemen!

“Brain like Berkeley”.  Great line.  Def watch out for more from Frank Ocean, he’s dope.  And of course, cop that Fleet Foxes when it drops.  Perfect for summer camping….

*BONUS*

Check out these three new acoustic (solo) songs from Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold, they’re very niiiiice.  Then, you have to watch this Nardwuar interview Tyler the Creator and Hodgy Beats from Odd Future.  These kids are off the yelzabar, as is Nardwuar…

Pale People

Uncategorized

The latest book from Christian Lander’s Stuff White People Like franchise, Whiter Shades Of Pale, picks up where the first one left off, listing and breaking down all the stuff that white people like (short stories, hummus, ultimate frisbee, etc).  But it also analyzes the specific types of white people that dwell in all the major cities white people love, using line drawings to illustrate their spot-on stereotypes (see Portland, Oregon white people drawing above).  To view more line drawings from the book (with descriptions), hit the link below and click through the pictures:

Whiter Shades Of Pale LINE DRAWINGS

Cop the book HERE.  It’s a fun toilet read, which is definitely something that white people like to do, read while they’re taking a shit.  Am I right, or am I right?  Toodles.
