Record Breaker

Events, My Dudes

A couple weeks ago, Chiddy (from the up and coming Philly based rap group Chiddy Bang) broke the Guiness Book world record for the longest freestyle ever, clocking in at 9 hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds, beating the previous record by 2 minutes.  See the video of him surpassing the old record HERE.  Unfortunately for him though, Boyder, one of Asher Roth’s rapping homies, already set a new record!!!  Not really, but peep the video of him pretending to break Chiddy’s record above.  It shows clips of him freestyling in the shower, with a chick on his lap watching TV, and even while poking holes in a yam as he microwaves it.  Favorite Boyder line, “I just be jogging down the street, eating Greek yogurt”, which he spits while actually jogging down the street eating Greek yogurt.  Stupid but funny.  Sorry, but I love shit like this.  Peace to Boyder, Asher, and the rest of their crew.  Good dudes.  Hollerrrrr.

Three The Hard Way

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus, The Good Old Days

I grew up idolizing the Beastie Boys.  They were three crazy Jewish kids from New York that made dope hip hop records, and as a young teenager obsessed with rap music, they were the guys I could actually relate too.  I loved Check Your Head and Ill Communication, and seeing them at Lollapalooza in 1994 is still one of my most memorable concert experiences ever.  Well, after a bit of a hiatus, the Beastie Boys are back with a new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (there’s no part one), and they sound as fresh as ever.  Check out the 29 minute extended video movie “Fight For Your Right (Revisited)” above, which features every comedic actor you love that is popular right now, from Will Ferrell to Danny McBride to Seth Rogan to, well, everyone (peep the album cut “Too Many Rappers” featuring Nas playing during the closing credits too).  The whole thing is unreal.  And below, just for good measure, watch the classic clip from back in the day of myself, Matty B, and Jiggs performing “Sure Shot” on our cable access show Prime Time with Dan and Andrew

Oh shit, right?  Thanks to the Beastie Boys for inspiring me to make my own rap music.  Cop that album HERE.

In other hip hop news that puts a huge smile on my face, I saw Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest Documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life last week with my cousin CI and his crew at the Tribeca Film Festival (movie opens in theaters this summer).  No Mas NYC had a hand in the animation production of the film (which was dope), and I love seeing the Isenberg name in the credits of what will surely be hailed as one of the greatest hip hop documentaries of all time.  It’s excellent.  Coincidentally, the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest both made a huge impact on my life.  Their existence literally bombarded my whole being.  And I should mention that Tribe was on that Lollapalooza bill too.  What a day that was for me, seeing both of those groups live for the first time.  Anyway, to tie these two newsworthy releases together with a nice Westcheddar bow, here’s the Beastie Boys and Q-Tip collaboration “Get It Together”.  Such a fun tune, don’t you agree?

Found some live footage of this for the true heads.  Tip didn’t know the words, still ill though.  From 1996, peep it HERE.

*BONUS*

I will leave you with a throwback gem of sorts that fits with the title of this post I guess.  Just some shit I was listening to a few minutes ago.  Del The Funkee Homosapian featuring Q-Tip and Pep Love “Undisputed Champs”.  This was a song that I first read about in The Source magazine when it was listed in their monthly Fat Tape section.  I remember thinking, “Oh shit, Del and Q-Tip did a song together?”  This shit is butters…

I think I’m going to spend a good chunk of this week listening to the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, and Del (No Need For Alarm is a classic album!), just so I can feel like I’m 15 again.  I suggest you do the same.  Oh, and I’ve been on a Nas kick lately.  I think out of all my favorite rappers, he has the most songs I like in his catalog.  Throw him in the mix too.  Another major Ipcus influence and enormous part of my teenage years.  Okay, I’m out.  One.

Oh yeah, did I mention that I’m on this shit?  Stan Ipcus and DJ Roz go way back.  He was a couple years younger than me growing up in WP, and I always knew him as the kid with the Tommy Hilfiger shirts that hung out with my boy Greg from Ogden Avenue.  Then, in ’98, he came to College Park, and ever since we’ve been tight.  I remember the first time we really hung out, we went to DC to see Hieroglyphics at this club, and Roz kept it real and hopped in the B-boy circle and started breakdancing.  That’s when I knew he was hip hop for real hahaha.  Then, after we got jerked trying to get a radio show at WMUC, we started doing our own live shows on campus, at Frat parties, and at local clubs in the area.  Roz would DJ, I would spit, and K-Wet would wild out!  And of course, we’d bring up guests too, like Max B, Al Jiggy, Nef, Bless, Uno, Heem, B.O., Kalash, and Matty Mill (Matisyahu pre-beard).  Those were the days.  Then of course, Roz and I made the classic Stan Ipcus mixtape Real Breezy in 2006 and even did a couple shows in NYC to promote it which was fun.  So when it was time to give him an exclusive for Champion Sounds, you know I had to come through.  Thanks to Roz for putting me on his new mixtape and giving an old pal some shine.  Shit is sick.  WP stand up!  DMV stand up!  Peace..

In The Zone

My Dudes

The homie Big Wayde from White Plains just dropped his new video yesterday “Zoned”, and it’s dope.  Love the football field shot with the WP in the background.  Keep doing your thing my G!  Oh, and in other local news, my dudes at CrimdelaCrims just put out a hilarious clip filmed in Mt. Kisco at the BGC of our skater boy Diego getting dunked on!  He thought he was about to get interviewed but instead he got put on a poster!  Shit is mad funny!!!!!

And that’s the latest from Westcheddar.  Peace and love…

Count On Me

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

My homeboys Shem’s Disciples just put together a nice cover of Bruno Mars’ song “Count On Me”, and I’m digging it.  Perfect for the little duns.  Peep the video below of my dude Moshe and his guitarist going in.  Tell me Moshe doesn’t have some of the best chi around…

So Shem’s Disciples asked me to hop on a remix of the song, and of course you can count on Big Ip to come through for my peeps.  They sent the track over last night, and I wrote my verse early this morning.  Here’s a little preview video to give you a taste of what’s to come.  Pardon the sick voice (literally), I’m a bit under the weather…

Stay tuned for the official remix coming soon!  Hollerrrrr…

Last Of A Balding Breed

My Dudes

My Pelham pal Jonathan Lesser is bald, but he’s hoping his son won’t ever have to worry about that.  In his latest piece for The Good Men Project Magazine titled “The Cure for Baldness Is Almost Here”, Jonny tells us that our generation of men will most likely be the last to ever have to go bald.  Good news for his son, but unfortunately his own head is still “follically challenged”.  Click the link to read…

The Cure for Baldness Is Almost Here by Jonathan Lesser

Nice work.  And as a bit of a bonus, check out a couple related clips.  First, in this hilarious Seinfeld scene, George gets a hairpiece to hide his baldness from a woman who ironically ends up being bald herself…

And here, Larry David discusses baldness with a potential chef for his new restaurant on Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry fires him later in the episode after discovering that the guy actually wears a hairpiece on the low haha)…

One more.  Larry is the victim of a “hate crime” against bald people after refusing to give teenage girls with no costumes candy on Halloween.  Classic…

Shout out to all my balding brothers out there.  I can’t front, I’m starting to thin out a bit myself up top.  All good though.  Sounds like science is looking out for our seeds.  Oh, and if you missed it, read a great story that Lesser wrote a year or so ago for Men’s Health about his relationship with his father-in-law HERE.  Toodles.

Snow Flow

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

Ok, I’m gonna let this one fly.  My boy DJ Roz has a new mixtape coming out in a few weeks, and he asked me to do an exclusive for it.  You know I had to come through for him with some crazy shit.  Check it out, over Big Daddy Kane’s “Warm It Up Kane” instrumental.  This is the illest rap I’ve spit in a minute, if I do say so myself.  Enjoy…

And if you want a blast from the past, download that Stan Ipcus x DJ Roz classic mixtape Real Breezy HERE.  And stay tuned for that new DJ Roz Champion Sounds mixtape coming soon.  Holler at your boy!

Return To Stubb’s

Events, My Dudes

Matisyahu’s new CD/DVD, Live at Stubb’s II, is in stores now.  I’m so proud of my boy.  He’s still doing his thing, touring like crazy and making great music.  I’m excited to check this out, it looks like a really nice release for him.  He’s such a great performer, so it’s only right that he put out a sequel to his first live album.

And for those of you who have never seen him in concert, well then the DVD is definitely a must have.  Watch the trailer above (and a clip of “Jerusalem” HERE).  And below, let’s bring it back to his first trip to Stubb’s in Austin, Texas, with his classic live performance of “King Without A Crown”…

Congrats to Matis on all the success.  Keep going my dude!  Oh yeah, Get Live at Stubb’s II HERE.  Peace…

Behind The Laughs

My Dudes

I’ve been totally nerding it up lately, listening to comedy podcasts in my car to and fro work, and also while shoveling snow (which has been happening weekly this winter).  I first discovered comedian Marc Maron’s interview style show WTF a couple months ago, and ever since I’ve been hooked.  He basically starts each episode by going on a little rant, like why he can’t find any good seashells at the beach anymore or something wacky like that, and then he interviews a featured guest.  Most of his interviews are done from his garage, but occasionally he’ll take his show on the road.  And he interviews all sorts of comedians, from big dogs like Robin Williams and Ben Stiller, to up and comers like Aziz Ansari, about the ins and outs of their craft, and also about their careers and how they came up.  The interviews are very insightful, interesting, and of course, funny.  And Westcheddar’s favorite comedian, Nick Kroll, has been on the podcast a couple times in character as El Chupacabra.  Check out this clip of Kroll aka El Chupacabra and Maron live from the garage.  Off the hook…

Maron’s podcast is free, but probably not for long.  He recently was written up in Rolling Stone magazine, and has a nice buzz circulating in the rapidly growing comedy podcast world as one of the trendsetters.  Definitely check out his archives and see if any names pop out that interest you.  I’ll start you with a couple recommendations…

WTF with Judd Apatow PART ONE and PART TWO

WTF with Aziz Ansari

WTF with Thomas Lennon (RENO 911, I Love You, Man, The State)

WTF with Adam McKay (Writer, Producer Eastbound and Down, Anchorman)

Actually, it looks like you have to buy the old episodes with Robin Williams and Ben Stiller on Itunes now, which shows that WTF is blowing up, because just a couple weeks ago they were free.  Def worth the purchase though.  Check his website and link below for more episodes and info…

Matisyahu Miracles

Events, My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

Fun times last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for Matisyahu’s 5th annual Festival of Light.  Matis was in great form, backed by his boys Dub Trio, taking the stage in a white Yankees fitted and ripping through his growing catalog of jams.  It was my pleasure to join him on stage for “Sparkseekers” and “WP”, but the highlight of the night was definitely when he brought out Citizen Cope to do beatbox renditions of Cope’s songs “Lifeline” and “Bullet and a Target”.  Exclusive video footage of the Citizen Cope and Stan Ipcus appearances below…

“Lifeline”

“Bullet and a Target”

“Sparkseekers”

“WP”

And in celebration of Hanukah, Matisyahu released a new song and video, “Miracle”, which he performed last night (people in the front row were calling for him to play it all night).  Check out the video below, it’s super fun!!!!!!

Thanks to my dude Matisyahu for bringing me out to perform, as always it was thrilling…Happy Hanukah Westcheddar!
