Matisyahu Takes Tarrytown

Events, My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

Matis put on a very special performance in Tarrytown last week in support of Westhab (run by his father), gathering his homeboys Moshe, Aaron, and Rob onstage for semi-stripped down set. Matis rocked most of the show on a stool, and sounded better than ever. But the highlight of the night was when he invited a young kid, Luke Weber, on stage to sing “One Day.” Luke, who you can tell from his bald head is going through some tough times, brought the house down. It was quite a moment. Watch the video above. And oh yeah, I made an appearance too. I must say Luke was a tough act to follow though. But spitting “Let’s Walk” with Moshe on drums is always a winner. Felt good to be back on stage with the mic. Doesn’t happen that often anymore. Check a little iPhone crowd footage snippet below for proof…

Thanks to Matis for pulling your old pal on stage, and for hooking up my BGC kids with free tickets. Get well soon Luke! We’re all rooting for you!

DJ Whoo Kid Interviews Matisyahu

Interviews, My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

My boy Matisyahu shaved his beard last month, and it was big news! The pics he posted on Twitter were all over the Internet, from the Huffington Post to the Washington Post to Billboard Magazine. Crazy. What’s funny is that I was just with him over Thanksgiving, and a few days before we got up I had a dream that he shaved his beard! True story!

So now the dust has settled a bit (pun intended), and Matis is in the lab working on his new album, Sparkseeker. And he’s been sending me songs to put verses on, so look out for your boy possibly being on there.

Matis recently did an interview with DJ Whoo Kid, one of my favorite mixtape DJs and hip-hop personalities of all time, and they discussed the shave (he got it done at Supercuts LOL), his influences, and his thoughts on current artists that are out now. He also talks about the show we did in Mount Vernon in 2000 (the picture from that day is the Westcheddar header see above) and mentions Stanley Ipcus, which is crazy because I met Whoo Kid on a plane coming home from doing a show with Matis at Sundance Film Festival in 2007. Whoo Kid’s reaction to hearing my name is awesome. Very cool that he knew who I was and remembered me. Check the clip above. Pow!

Hard Bars

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

My young boy Kaliph from Mt. Kisco is getting ready to drop his first solo album, ARTism, and this is the first video release from the project. The song is called “Menace,” and I’m featured on the third verse, which is one of the hardest verses I’ve ever spit. Props to Kaliph for inviting me on to this song. He produced the beat from scratch, and it’s super dope. He also handled the editing, which in my opinion is pretty impressive for someone who just started making videos. And don’t sleep on his raps! His choppy flow reminds me of Jeru The Damaja. And shout to my dude Xavier Simmons (DMX’s son) for the filming and directing. Nice job, fellas. Glad to be a part of this 914 instant classic.

Stay tuned for the official drop of ARTism. More videos from the album coming soon too….

*UPDATE*

Kaliph just posted another video from ARTism. This song is called “Contemplating,” and it’s my favorite cut on the album. I love this beat. I even have a Stan Ipcus version of this song in the stash. But Kaliph’s is superior. Check this shit. Dope video too…

On The Road with Asher Roth

Interviews, Published Material, Stan Ipcus

My relationship with Asher Roth has gone through many stages. First, at the height of my hip-hop fame (after dropping “My Ferris Buellers”), I dissed him on wax, and it ended up on NahRight and all over the Internet. Then, a few weeks later, I saw him backstage at a Peter Rosenberg event and said what’s up, and it was all peace. At another Rosenberg event months after that, I met his boys Boyder and Brain Bangley, and his DJ Wreckineyez, and again, all peace, and lots of laughs even about the diss. Then, Asher dropped his Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry mixtape, and I loved it. So I wrote this post on Westcheddar called Deconstructing Asher, breaking down why I dissed him, and how I became his biggest fan. I tweeted the link to him, and he read it, and hit me back showing mad love and appreciation. Later that morning, we talked on the phone for about an hour, about everything, and ever since we’ve been friends. And now, with his new Def Jam deal signed (WOW!), and a new album and mixtape on the way, I reached out to interview Asher about what he loves to do most: perform live. Check the link to this exclusive Complex interview below, all about his live performance history…

Complex Magazine Interview: On The Road with Asher Roth

Also, check out Asher’s latest video above for “In The Kitchen” produced by Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids, off his upcoming mixtape Pabst & Jazz due later this month. Shit’s dope, and it features a cameo from none other than Action Bronson. Shout to Ash and his whole crew, best of luck with the new deal! Oh, and if you want some seriously entertaining whiteboy rap shit in your life, check out Boyder and Brain’s new mixtape For The Story.

*BONUS*

Speaking of in the kitchen, The Fader Magazine paid a visit to Action Bronson’s crib last week to film him making leftover Thanksgiving sliders. If you saw his Bronson Burger, then you already know these things are off the meat rack. Peep game.

*By the way, this is my 500th Westcheddar post! Thanks to all my loyal readers who check out the site on the reg! Got something very epic (and I never use that word so you know I mean it) coming soon to celebrate….

All The Way Live with Matisyahu

My Dudes, Published Material, Stan Ipcus

I documented my recent appearance with Matisyahu at his Benefit Concert in NYC for a new ticketing and live entertainment site called Charged.FM, whose online magazine is being managed by my buddy Tommy Dee. Great night indeed, with Matis, Moshe, Aaron Dugan, and the rest of the gang (see pic below of heads backstage putting together the set list). I sat in for “WP” and a really dope rendition of my own song “Let’s Walk”. Read the entire story, and see pictures and video from the night, in the link below…

All The Way Live with Matisyahu: Unplugged and Personal

Thanks to my brother Matisyahu for inviting me to perform, and giving Charged.FM all exclusive access. Finger point to Tommy Dee for the assist, and shout to Johnny Ritchie for the sick photos. Here’s the video clip of “Let’s Walk”….

Three The Hard Way

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus, The Good Old Days

I grew up idolizing the Beastie Boys.  They were three crazy Jewish kids from New York that made dope hip hop records, and as a young teenager obsessed with rap music, they were the guys I could actually relate too.  I loved Check Your Head and Ill Communication, and seeing them at Lollapalooza in 1994 is still one of my most memorable concert experiences ever.  Well, after a bit of a hiatus, the Beastie Boys are back with a new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (there’s no part one), and they sound as fresh as ever.  Check out the 29 minute extended video movie “Fight For Your Right (Revisited)” above, which features every comedic actor you love that is popular right now, from Will Ferrell to Danny McBride to Seth Rogan to, well, everyone (peep the album cut “Too Many Rappers” featuring Nas playing during the closing credits too).  The whole thing is unreal.  And below, just for good measure, watch the classic clip from back in the day of myself, Matty B, and Jiggs performing “Sure Shot” on our cable access show Prime Time with Dan and Andrew

Oh shit, right?  Thanks to the Beastie Boys for inspiring me to make my own rap music.  Cop that album HERE.

In other hip hop news that puts a huge smile on my face, I saw Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest Documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life last week with my cousin CI and his crew at the Tribeca Film Festival (movie opens in theaters this summer).  No Mas NYC had a hand in the animation production of the film (which was dope), and I love seeing the Isenberg name in the credits of what will surely be hailed as one of the greatest hip hop documentaries of all time.  It’s excellent.  Coincidentally, the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest both made a huge impact on my life.  Their existence literally bombarded my whole being.  And I should mention that Tribe was on that Lollapalooza bill too.  What a day that was for me, seeing both of those groups live for the first time.  Anyway, to tie these two newsworthy releases together with a nice Westcheddar bow, here’s the Beastie Boys and Q-Tip collaboration “Get It Together”.  Such a fun tune, don’t you agree?

Found some live footage of this for the true heads.  Tip didn’t know the words, still ill though.  From 1996, peep it HERE.

*BONUS*

I will leave you with a throwback gem of sorts that fits with the title of this post I guess.  Just some shit I was listening to a few minutes ago.  Del The Funkee Homosapian featuring Q-Tip and Pep Love “Undisputed Champs”.  This was a song that I first read about in The Source magazine when it was listed in their monthly Fat Tape section.  I remember thinking, “Oh shit, Del and Q-Tip did a song together?”  This shit is butters…

I think I’m going to spend a good chunk of this week listening to the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, and Del (No Need For Alarm is a classic album!), just so I can feel like I’m 15 again.  I suggest you do the same.  Oh, and I’ve been on a Nas kick lately.  I think out of all my favorite rappers, he has the most songs I like in his catalog.  Throw him in the mix too.  Another major Ipcus influence and enormous part of my teenage years.  Okay, I’m out.  One.

FREE DOWNLOAD DJ ROZ PRESENTS CHAMPION SOUNDS

Oh yeah, did I mention that I’m on this shit?  Stan Ipcus and DJ Roz go way back.  He was a couple years younger than me growing up in WP, and I always knew him as the kid with the Tommy Hilfiger shirts that hung out with my boy Greg from Ogden Avenue.  Then, in ’98, he came to College Park, and ever since we’ve been tight.  I remember the first time we really hung out, we went to DC to see Hieroglyphics at this club, and Roz kept it real and hopped in the B-boy circle and started breakdancing.  That’s when I knew he was hip hop for real hahaha.  Then, after we got jerked trying to get a radio show at WMUC, we started doing our own live shows on campus, at Frat parties, and at local clubs in the area.  Roz would DJ, I would spit, and K-Wet would wild out!  And of course, we’d bring up guests too, like Max B, Al Jiggy, Nef, Bless, Uno, Heem, B.O., Kalash, and Matty Mill (Matisyahu pre-beard).  Those were the days.  Then of course, Roz and I made the classic Stan Ipcus mixtape Real Breezy in 2006 and even did a couple shows in NYC to promote it which was fun.  So when it was time to give him an exclusive for Champion Sounds, you know I had to come through.  Thanks to Roz for putting me on his new mixtape and giving an old pal some shine.  Shit is sick.  WP stand up!  DMV stand up!  Peace..

Ipcus Madness Recap

Events, Stan Ipcus

Well, Ipcus Madness is in the books, and the winner of the Greatest Stan Ipcus Song Of All Time is “The La Life”!  We started with a field of 64 songs, worked it down to the Sticky Sixteen, then the Final Forties, and finally, after many votes tallied on Facebook, Twitter, Email, Text, and BBM, there was one winner.  “The La Life”, Produced by my good bud Max B, and written and recorded during my Senior year at College Park (’99/2000), is a song about life as a young weed smoker.  It’s kind of the dark side of it all, truthfully.  And although I could have never predicted that it would take home the crown as GSISOAT, I’m proud of it, and consider it probably the realest song I ever wrote and recorded.  I guess the real always wins.  Shouts to “I Does This”, who lost in the finals by about 5 votes.   I was also surprised that song made it as far as it did, taking out “Real Ganja Talk” in the Sticky Sixteen.  But even with a low quality recording, and only clocking in at 1:38, it’s swag was on a hundred thousand million and almost took the title home.  Peep the Final Forties poster above (by Will Merchan), and the Sticky Sixteen below (by David Roy)…

I gotta say, when we got to the Sticky Sixteen, I was pretty happy with the songs that had gotten there.  I was surprised “Wifey Material” got knocked out in the first round (by “Don’t Mind Me Miss”), and “Chilly Chill” took out the Asher Roth diss which was also surprising, but all the #1 seeds were still in, and I really thought the bigger songs would overpower the rest of the field.  Then, “Real Ganja Talk” went down, “Hammer” went down, “Ippy Strut” went down, and “My Ferris Buellers” went down, all in the Sticky Sixteen, and I was stunned.  Wow, all the songs that I thought might win it all were knocked out.  The only one left that I thought had enough heat to take it all the way was “Pay U No Mind”, which ended up getting knocked out by one vote in the Final Forties by the champ.  I’d say “Chilly Chill” was the biggest surprise sleeper of the tournament, definitely didn’t even think it would make it out of the first round, though I do really like that track.  All in all, it was a fun last minute idea I had, that was executed well, and I loved the participation from not only old and new friends, but also just fans of Stan Ipcus music that I’ve never met personally.  Some really passionate peeps got involved, and that was super cool to see.  And props to Soundcloud, who’s embedding/link sharing and streaming game is so sick that it made the tournament run beautifully.  Here’s how the bracket finished out (props to Bracket Maker too):

IPCUS MADNESS FINAL BRACKET

Also, here’s the second verse of “The La Life”, which instantly brings me back to a cloudy day in College Park.  I actually wrote that verse as a poem for my History of Blues class, and read it for the entire lecture as part of a group presentation (Aaron McGruder, the creator of The Boondocks, was in my group).  I got an A.

When I get the blues I keep my eyes red with la to head,

hold it down for the fam, that’s what my Mom and Pop said,

what they don’t know only hurts them much more,

my daily walk is down the hill to get a Dutch from the store,

I stroll dolo in the Polo but why even get dipped,

herbs that pass me by you better chill or else you’ll get gipped,

honeys used to get a smile, now they get an ice frown,

saw my old girl last night, I just gave her a pound,

no convo, instead I stayed on the low,

only concern for right now is “Yo, where’s the dro?”

I wanna stoop it, lay up and get stupid,

used to be about the ladies until I lost my faith in Cupid,

love at first sight sounds alright until she spends the night,

seeing her again depends on if she keeps it tight,

I sleep it off, wake up and walk it off,

gips talk my ear off while I’m sitting sipping beer at The Loft,

I watch the ballgame, all these birds know our name,

thinking White Plains cats will send them down the Walk of Shame,

sure I bagged a couple, shagged the double D’s with matching bubble,

puffed some trees and stayed out of trouble,

now I stay burnt like siena,

got my mans in VA, Portland, Philly, NY, and Siena,

school be blowing mines, half the time I got my mind on dimes,

the kind and wine it keeps me feeling fine,

at high noon I rise, missed a class to get some ass,

what a relief, before I brush my teeth I twist some grass,

these girls got my head, school got my bread,

I need to get on track, instead I take a sack to head,

and that’s The La Life….

Thanks to everyone who participated in Ipcus Madness!  Mad love!!!!

Count On Me

My Dudes, Stan Ipcus

My homeboys Shem’s Disciples just put together a nice cover of Bruno Mars’ song “Count On Me”, and I’m digging it.  Perfect for the little duns.  Peep the video below of my dude Moshe and his guitarist going in.  Tell me Moshe doesn’t have some of the best chi around…

So Shem’s Disciples asked me to hop on a remix of the song, and of course you can count on Big Ip to come through for my peeps.  They sent the track over last night, and I wrote my verse early this morning.  Here’s a little preview video to give you a taste of what’s to come.  Pardon the sick voice (literally), I’m a bit under the weather…

Stay tuned for the official remix coming soon!  Hollerrrrr…
