Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings new album I Learned The Hard Way drops next week, but NPR is giving the world a sneak preview of the whole album.  First peep this interview with Jones and live clip of her and the Dap Kings performing last week at SXSW, courtesy of Billboard.  Then check out the new album on NPR’s First Listen…

Listen to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings I Learned The Hard Way on NPR

Did I mention I’m a big time Sharon Jones fan?  She’s one bad mama.  Fitz Winkleman and I previewed the title track on our last episode of Westcheddar Radio, check it out HERE if you missed it.  Much respect to Daptone Records for continuing to put out dope soul music for the masses, and doing cool things like giving away a bonus 45 record (look and listen below) free with a pre-order of the new album on their website.  And Amazon’s got the album on pre-sale too, along with three “making of the album” videos (the first one is up now, other two will follow), RIGHT HERE.

Cop that album.  Hollerrrrrr.

Westcheddar Radio #3: Spring Forward

Westcheddar Radio

Spring is here!  Finally, dude.  What a winter.  Snow, sleet, crazy winds and rain.  You name it, we had it here in Westchester County.  But now the sun is out, and the warm weather has arrived, and I couldn’t be happier.  To help celebrate the first day of spring, I present Westcheddar Radio #3: Spring Forward, hosted by myself and Fitz Winkleman.  Got a great episode for you to listen to, with an eclectic mix of soul, indie, 90’s hip hop, and roots reggae music.  Check the artist lineup above, and download/stream the show below…

Nardwuar Interviews Matisyahu

Interviews, My Dudes

Nardwuar the Human Serviette, my favorite interviewer on the planet (he’s interviewed everyone from Jay-Z to Kurt Cobain), recently linked up for an interview with Matisyahu while he was in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics.  I have to take credit for putting this together, as I reached out to both of them a while back suggesting they connect the next time Matisyahu was in Vancouver, which is Narduwar’s home base.  The video footage is coming soon, but for now, here’s the audio segment from Nardwuar’s radio show which includes the very entertaining interview with Matis (Nardwuar did his research!!) and also some live and studio recorded Matisyahu and Stan Ipcus music.  Thanks for sending me the exclusive picture Nardwuar, and also for playing my songs on your show!  Have a good dinner (haha that’s how Nardwuar ends all his emails)!

Zach Is Back

Uncategorized

Zach Galifianakis is so damn funny.  He’s one of the few modern comedians that really makes me LOL consistently.  I especially love his talk show, Between Two Ferns, which I’ve posted on Westcheddar in the past.  Here’s the latest episode, featuring guest Ben Stiller, who’s out plugging his new movie Greenberg (it’s directed by the same guy who did one of my favorite films The Squid and the Whale)…

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Galifianakis also hosted his first Saturday Night Live episode earlier this month.  Here’s a clip of his hilarious opening monologue…
Vodpod videos no longer available.

I heard he shaved his beard off at the end of the show.  Is that true?  Haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but I’m gonna.  And if you missed my post of his stand up special, watch it HERE.  Peace out…

Okay, let the Westcheddar promotion of the new Band of Horses album officially begin!  Infinite Arms drops May 18th, they’re at MSG with Pearl Jam May 21st, but they still haven’t released any new songs.  The picture above, however, is from a recent show at the Ogden Theater in Denver.  Grabbed it off their Twitter.  Anyway, here’s the most recent interview I could find with them (lead singer Ben Bridwell and new addition to the band Ludwig Boss), where they talk about the new album and much more.  Live from Sweden son…

Great band.  Really looking forward to their new album….

Nothing U Can Do

Stan Ipcus

Brand new Stan Ipcus!  This one is called “Nothing U Can Do”, produced by my dude Kaliph, a 16 year old up and coming producer out of Mt. Kisco.  His work speaks for himself.  I’m really feeling this one.  Enjoy…

DOWNLOAD/STREAM STAN IPCUS “NOTHING U CAN DO” (DIRTY VERSION)

And shout out to Jae Boogz, my dude from WP, who premiered the song this morning on his radio show.  He also had actor Bryan Greenberg from the HBO series How To Make It In America on the show.  Check it out HERE.

My boy Benji aka DJ Scrotum aka Scro Scro the Abuser put together this Ipcus Trap Mix on his site Top Slob.  Check the playlist above, and then download/stream HERE.  Also, if you missed it, peep Verses From The Ipster.  Cheah!

Brat Pack Book

The Good Old Days

I am so excited to read this book.  Just copped it yesterday at Borders.  Anyone like me who’s a fan of John Hughes 80’s teen flicks will certainly enjoy this.  It’s very rare that I see a book I actually want to read in full, but this grabbed my attention the moment I saw the cover.  Sounds like the pages are filled with lots of juicy behind the scenes stories, “making of” details, and much more.  Here’s the description of the book, taken from it’s official website

You can quote lines from The Breakfast Club, your iPod playlist includes more than one song by The Psychedelic Furs and Simple Minds, and you still wish that Andie had ended up with Duckie in Pretty in Pink. You’re a bonafide “Brat Pack” devotee, and you’re not alone. The films of the Brat Pack, from Sixteen Candles and St. Elmo’s Fire to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Say Anything— and the landscape that they memorialized, where outcasts and prom queens fall in love and preppies and burnouts become friends— have influenced an entire generation who still wants to believe that life always turns out like an ’80s movie.

“You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried” takes us back to that golden age of youth cinema, through author Susannah Gora’s original and revealing interviews with scores of key players such as Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Matthew Broderick, Andrew McCarthy, Cameron Crowe, Rob Lowe, Joel Schumacher, Jon Cryer, and John Cusack. Gora mines all the material from these movies, from the music to the way the films were made, and show how they shaped our vision of romance, friendship, society and success. Full of compelling anecdotes about the deep friendships, the off-screen romances, the breakdowns and the breakups, and the infamous night on the town that led a writer from New York magazine to dub this core group of actors “The Brat Pack,” affecting their careers and personal lives for decades to come, “You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried” is also the most comprehensive study of the late John Hughes, the godfather of the genre.

In The Breakfast Club, Judd Nelson’s rebel Bender tells Molly Ringwald’s prom queen Claire, “Sweets, you couldn’t ignore me if you tried,” and time has shown that even if we tried, we couldn’t ignore the impact of The Brat Pack and their movies. “You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried” is the definitive account of the movies that stirred an entire generation, and a poignant homage to the people who brought those films to life.

Holler at me if you want to read this along with me.  We can start an online book club!  Yay!  And if you missed it, check out my Westcheddar tribute to John Hughes (RIP) HERE.

Peace…

Events, Youth

I posted the link below last night to the first ever BGC Open Mic (which I hosted at my job), but I wanted to give my boy Xavier Simmons his proper shine, because he especially went in with the spoken word.  Xavier has transformed in the past six months from a rapper to a full fledged musician and writer, focusing more on poetry and writing songs on the piano than just murdering instrumentals (which trust me he can do with ease).  Here’s his performance from the BGC Open Mic, titled “The Mechanics Of Life”….

Crazy, right?  My G is gifted with it.  More videos and pics from the open mic HERE.  Please check it out, there were some great performances by some really talented kids.  And before I go, I gotta throw the video up of my dudes the Gym Lawyer Band, two of my best friends who performed together live for the first time in over a year at the event (you might recognize Matty B from “Hammer”).  How raw are these guys?

Lots of talent in Westchester County.  Who else is out there?  Holler at your boy and let me know so I can check them out.  Uno.

Ski School

Uncategorized

Ski Beatz, best known for his work with Jay-Z and Camp Lo, is in the lab hard body working with Dame Dash on the 24 Karate School mixtape/album.  Featuring everyone from Jay Electronica to Mos Def to Jim Jones to the Cool Kids, this is one of the freshest projects cooking in hip hop right now.  And the promotional videos are dope too.  Check this visual mixtape above to get a feel for the flavor.  It’s worth watching just to hear that first Jay Electronica verse, shit is crack.  And watch the clip below of Ski Beatz and Jay-Z reminiscing about their classic song, “Dead Presidents”…

By the way, this was my boy Goldberg’s favorite movie as a teenager.  I wonder why?
